Saint Mary’s Academy (SMA) this morning officially named its newly completed science facility the Elwin-Jolly Science Laboratory, a milestone hailed by Principal Mrs. Sylvia John-Baptiste as a “sacred space for inquiry and discovery.”

Addressing a distinguished audience that included Bishop Kendricks Forbes, the Chairman of the Catholic School Board of Management, alumni, staff, students, and representatives of the Elwin and Jolly families, Mrs. John-Baptiste emphasized the lab’s transformative role in the school’s academic mission.

“Today, we stand together to mark not only the growth of our school’s physical facilities,” she said, “but also the strengthening of our collective commitment to education, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge.”

The principal described the laboratory as more than a building—it is a symbol of vision and dedication. “This ceremony is far more than the unveiling of a name,” she noted. “It is a recognition of the enduring belief that education is a foundation upon which progress is built.”

The Elwin-Jolly Science Laboratory is expected to serve as a hub for scientific exploration, where students will be encouraged to nurture curiosity, test ideas, and develop leadership skills. Mrs. John-Baptiste expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Elwin and Jolly families, whose contributions and presence “elevate the significance of this occasion.”

She acknowledged the broader community of benefactors, teachers, parents, and friends whose support made the project possible. “Your continued support and encouragement remind us of the shared responsibility we hold in preparing the next generation for a world of challenges and possibilities,” she said.

Mrs. John-Baptiste also called on all present to embrace the promise the new facility represents.

“May this space stand as a lasting symbol of excellence, discovery, and enlightenment for generations yet to come.”

The SMA science lab at Saint Mary’s Academy in Dominica has been named the Elwin-Jolly Science Laboratory to honor two pillars of the institution and the wider Dominican community:

– The late Cuthbert Elwin, a distinguished alumnus and former principal of the Academy who is remembered for his impactful leadership and dedication to education. His legacy continues to inspire generations of students and educators at the school.

– Jollys Pharmacy Limited and the Jolly Family: Their philanthropic support played a crucial role in the development of the laboratory. The naming recognizes their enduring commitment to education and community development in Dominica

The naming of the laboratory reflects the lasting influence of Mr. Elwin’s leadership and the Jolly family’s enduring commitment to education and community development in Dominica.
