A New Chapter for Education: Groundbreaking at Model Laboratory School | News

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Model Laboratory School at Eastern Kentucky University was full of excitement and thanks. John Williamson, Dean of P-12 Programs and Superintendent at Model Lab, served as the Master of Ceremonies, welcoming a diverse group of attendees, including students, faculty, staff, parents, community members, and distinguished guests. He highlighted the significance of the occasion, stating, “Today’s ceremonial groundbreaking has been a long time coming.” This project, made possible by a $149.1 million state-funded investment, was described by Williamson as “an incredible investment from our state legislature [that] is a bold testament to their belief in the future of education here in the Commonwealth.”
The new facility is envisioned as an innovative research and educational hub, designed to accommodate up to 1,100 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It will feature specialized spaces for various disciplines, including an early childhood center, elementary and secondary floors, inquiry-based science labs, career and technical areas, visual and performing arts facilities (including a performing arts center), a library, athletic facilities, outdoor learning spaces, collaboration areas, and a center for educator professional learning. Williamson acknowledged the contributions of the architectural teams, stating, “I’d like to say thank you to Michael Hughes and Brian Buckner and Kevin McCalla, who are with us today. and to Drew Daniel, a proud Model graduate and principal at KDA group, thank you for sharing your insight and innovative ideas on the latest in classroom furniture and equipment.”
