Lakeshore and UWindsor to collaborate on research, student placements

Local post-secondary students and an Essex County municipality are expected to benefit from a new, wide-ranging partnership.

This week, Lakeshore and the University of Windsor signed a memorandum of understanding to that will see both entities collaborate on community engagement, experiential learning opportunities for students, and research partnerships.

“This agreement marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to fostering innovation, education, and community impact,” said university president and vice-chancellor Dr. Robert Gordon.

“By partnering with the Municipality of Lakeshore, we are building new pathways for research collaboration, student learning, and regional development. Supported by our Centre for Cities, Office of Experiential Learning, and dedicated researchers, we will drive meaningful change and create opportunities that benefit both our students and the broader Lakeshore community.”

The scope of collaboration outlined in the five-year agreement includes student placements, community-based projects, initiatives through the university’s Centre for Cities, and faculty and student research supported by national funding programs.

“This partnership is an incredible opportunity to bring the energy, talent, and expertise of the University of Windsor into our communities,” said Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey.

“While the initial focus will be on our housing initiatives, I look forward to seeing this partnership grow in the spirit of collaboration and public service.”

In the future, joint initiatives may address housing development, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.

Last November, the university signed a five-year memorandum of understanding with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to explore research opportunities. That agreement aimed to bridge the university’s academic focus with Chatham-Kent’s strengths in agriculture, health, and environmental sustainability.
